Changelog
New features and fixes in Instacalc, newest first.
Experiments: early, opt-in things we’re building in the open
- alpha Wikipedia → Calculator: Open any Wikipedia formula article and Instacalc pulls its equations into live, editable cards beside the real article. Change a value and the result (and its curve) update. Try Ohm’s law →
- alpha Paper → Calculator: Paste an arXiv link and Instacalc pulls the paper’s equations out into live, editable cards. Change any number and watch the result update, side by side with the original PDF. Open the arXiv playground →
Click a field to drop contours, streamlines, and critical points; paste formulas straight from Excel or Wolfram Alpha; plus a round of sharing, sliding, and rendering fixes.
Engine Paste straight from Excel or Wolfram Alpha: curly-brace lists like {1,2,3}, fn[…] calls, Excel text functions, and systems of equations (“solve x+y=10, x-y=2”) all evaluate now.
Graphs Field visualization: drop contours, streamlines, points, critical points, and cross-sections onto any field or vector field, plus a ∇ connector that turns one into its gradient, divergence, curl, or Laplacian.
Graphs Graph drags are smooth again, no more stepping mid-drag, and Dashboard renders surface, field, and vector-field charts the same way calc view does.
Sharing A round of sharing fixes: desktop share opens the right menu for your pointer type, the share-menu popover no longer detaches from its button, and an embed link always points at the same calc as its share link.
Perf Typing feels sharper: per-keystroke traffic between the engine and the UI is down 65–99%.
UI Auto-generated labels (Age, Current weight, …) are sentence-case everywhere now, not just in Present mode; the unit picker shows short abbreviations like km/h instead of the full name.
Fixes Fixed: a content flash on cold-loading present mode, dark-mode LaTeX result color and an overlapping algebraic-form row, a slider that could flip a value’s sign or run away mid-drag, drag-to-solve’s false “grab me” underline, dropped “as X”/“in X” conversions on plain-English functions, and a tape-measure crash on non-finite values.
Edit links save more reliably, dragging to solve is legible, and the home page loads noticeably faster.
Engine log(0) (and log2/log10 of zero) returns a clean −∞ instead of a garbled complex value; “days until <date>” also handles month names, weekday prefixes, and dot-separated dates.
Graphs Dragging a slider on a plotted function now holds the y-axis steady instead of rescaling every frame.
Sharing Edit links now save reliably: edits from a shared edit link write straight to the real calc, for everyone with access.
Sharing Share menu cleaned up: an owner-only badge, recipients can re-share, and the edit-link popover no longer clips the URL.
Perf ~40% less JS on the home page’s first load, and warm keystrokes about 20% faster.
UI Grab-to-solve is legible: dragging a result to solve for it now shows a clear affordance, a highlighted knob, and rounds cleanly.
UI “Where instacalc fits”: a new homepage diagram maps common tasks against other tools, showing where instacalc covers the whole list.
Fixes Fixed stranded slider steppers, a phantom “my calc calc” save toast, a sliding breadcrumb on view switches, Text mode not mirroring prose rows, and a persistent Safari load error from a stale cache.
Present mode stops dropping values, 3D graphs render correctly again, and a Safari crash is gone.
Graphs 3D surfaces for two-variable functions render correctly again, auto-orbit spins calmer, and a formula-link 404 flash is gone.
UI Present mode no longer drops the value for natural-language rows like “10 mph for 4 hours”: it shows the computed result again.
UI The present-mode hero unit (like BMI’s kg/m²) now stays inside its tile instead of overflowing.
UI Explore’s subject pages now share the same breadcrumb header as the rest of the gallery.
Fixes Fixed a Safari crash on load caused by a PDF-library race condition.
A quieter present mode, plus small typing and sharing fixes.
UI Present mode restyled with flat-tile cards and serif reading type.
UI Sharper docs typography: cleaner type on the help and learn pages.
Fixes Prose typing fixed: sentences no longer trip on operator detection.
Fixes Share links survive punctuation: semicolons and pipes in a row no longer break the link.
Fixes Unit-mismatch warnings are more visible on the row.
Embed a live figure anywhere, and feel a ~3× faster engine.
Sharing Embed a single live figure with /embed/?figure=, or paste a link into Notion or Slack and it unfurls automatically.
Sharing Drag to back-solve: drag a result in a live embed and the driving input updates.
Perf ~3× faster warm engine: slider drags on heavy calcs feel instant now.
UI A live feature explorer on the homepage: click through what Instacalc can do.
Fixes Clearer errors: broken rows say what went wrong and where.
A real editable spreadsheet inside a calc, and LaTeX that computes.
Engine Data tables: @sheet turns a list into an editable spreadsheet: sort, reorder columns, totals, paste from Excel.
Engine Symbolic LaTeX: \sum, \int, \frac{d}{dx}, \lim, and \binom now compute instead of parsing as literal algebra.
Engine Prose rows render as Markdown, with {expr} filled in live.
Engine Custom summary rows: add your own Total, Average, or weighted footers to a table.
Graphs Charts from labeled data: piechart({hotel: 1, flight: 2, food: 3}) just works.
UI Row styling editor redesigned as a side panel.
Present-mode values now read as fields you can edit, spreadsheet imports handle quoted numbers, and Explain stays out of your way.
Engine Import real spreadsheets: CSV import now reads each column on its own, so quoted numbers from Google Sheets exports add up and average correctly.
Engine Explain only when you ask: the step-by-step panel no longer pops open on every derivative; it opens for an explicit “explain” and stays tidy otherwise.
Sharing Shared links preview better: gallery and shared calcs carry cleaner titles and descriptions when posted, and the homepage demo links to a real shared calc.
UI Editable values look editable: in present mode, a number you can change now shows as a soft input field instead of a highlight, so it’s obvious what’s tappable.
UI Avatar menu, unified: the account dropdown now uses the same menu as everything else, so it looks and behaves consistently.
UI More mobile menus became bottom sheets: the unit picker, function picker, and convert panel now slide up as scrollable sheets on touch.
Present mode packs more in, plots take a formula directly, and a round of mobile, conversion, and tooltip bugs are gone.
Engine Infinite sums fixed: p-series like the sum of 1/n⁴ now fold their coefficient into the closed form instead of dropping it.
Graphs Plot a function inline: define f(x) and write plot(f) to drop a chart right beside the math, present mode included.
UI Accessibility & polish pass: better color contrast, a real 404 and error page, and cleaner login and graph screens.
Fixes Insert menu works on phones: the footer “Insert ▾” now opens as a bottom sheet you can actually scroll on touch, instead of a clipped desktop popover.
Fixes Tooltips flip when they’re cramped: a hint with no room above now drops below the icon instead of covering it.
Fixes Hex and octal conversions fixed: fromhex with letters like a–f now parses correctly instead of returning nothing.
A visual bar lets you style any row inline, and the engine learned spread syntax.
Engine Spread syntax: build arrays and objects with “…”, like [...xs, y] and {...base, k: v}, exactly the way you would in code.
UI Row styling bar: select a row to tag it as a heading, hero, or status and watch it restyle live, no decorator syntax to remember.
UI One-tap new calc: the scratchpad tape header has a “+ New” pill that drops you into a fresh blank calc without losing the one you were on.
Fixes “37M x $160” now multiplies: an “x” right before a currency amount reads as times, not a stray variable.
Fixes Tap an active tab again: on mobile, tapping Calcs or Explore a second time always returns you to your calc.
Fixes f = derivative(x^2, x) stays a real function you can call: the leading name is no longer dropped, so f(3) gives 6.
Goal-seek now handles real calculations: it reaches inputs buried under other formulas, works with spaced variable names, and updates live as you type.
Engine Goal-seek now reaches inputs buried deep in your calculation: change a starting number even when your target is built from several layers of formulas.
UI The answer updates live as you type the goal: there’s no button to press.
UI Inputs start unlocked and free to change; click to lock the ones you want to hold fixed.
Fixes Goal-seek supports variable names with spaces: names like “Total Project” now show up in the menu and solve correctly.
Fixes Adding a goal-seek row no longer rewrites the references in your other formulas.
A new “Explain” panel reveals the steps behind calculus, limits, and transforms, not just the answer.
Engine Explain panel: open “Explain” on a result to see worked, step-by-step reasoning, with a short “why” on each step.
Engine Derivative steps: product and chain rule now expand into nested, collapsible steps you can follow line by line.
Engine Limits, worked out: limits resolve with real steps, including why sin(x)/x → 1 without circular reasoning.
Engine Transform steps: Laplace, Fourier, and inverse-Laplace show genuine derivations, not just a lookup table.
Engine Smarter rate conversions: same-dimension rates like “minutes/week in hours/day” now convert correctly.
Fixes Fixed an equation solver that returned the wrong root for some coefficient-times-x minus a constant.
Explore paints instantly, and the tally and unit engine got noticeably smarter.
Engine Tally through conversions: keep a running total going with words too, like “in km” or “→ cm”, not just +, −, ×, ÷.
Engine Math exam gallery: worked K-through-college exams with step-by-step tutorials and differential-equation support.
Engine Better unit math: phrasing like “$3/L for 40 L”, variable denominators, and @-scaled rates now evaluate the way you read them.
Graphs Reliable graph equations: the equation field now defaults to plain text, with the typeset math editor as an opt-in.
Perf Explore loads instantly: gallery cards render on the server, so the page paints right away instead of waiting seconds.
Fixes Custom embeds default to a light theme and no longer inherit the host page’s fonts.
Instacalc installs to your home screen and works offline, with a faster, steadier load.
Engine Running tally: start a row with +, −, ×, or ÷ to continue from the previous answer.
Graphs Radar charts now plot multiple data series on a single chart.
Graphs Find roots without losing your graph: solving adds a roots table and keeps your plot intact.
Sharing Richer link previews: shared data and formula links show rendered charts in their social previews.
Perf Instant home: the calculator loads in about a second and no longer jumps around as it paints.
Perf Install Instacalc: add it to your phone’s home screen or desktop; recent calcs and the gallery now work offline.
Fixes Older iOS Safari support and a smoother update flow: new releases load without a hard refresh.

UI Simpler top nav: streamlined down to Logo, Explore, and Learn.
Fixes Calcy AI now handles multi-turn chat and reliably names and generates calcs.
Fixes Fixed embed links that pointed at the wrong calc, and dropdowns that showed the wrong selected value.
Math inside comments, plus a round of typing and reliability fixes.
Engine Comment math: expressions like {2 + 2} now compute inline inside a comment.
Engine Forgiving typing: half-typed values in a collapsed row no longer error out mid-keystroke.
UI Edit on mobile: leave presentation mode on a phone with a single tap.
UI Font picker: pick and import fonts without the dropdown filtering itself away.
Fixes Reliability: fixed a Safari caret jump, flaky keyboard shortcuts, and a login-sync gap that could lose a just-saved calc.
